Courageous Rail Employee Endures Critical Wounds Amid Multiple Stabbing Incident on Express Service
A brave railway staff member who stepped in to protect passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has sustained critical wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Event
Surveillance footage allegedly shows the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in custody for interrogation. Authorities announced a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Response and Aftermath
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from hospital.
A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous employee of rail staff whose family are being assisted by trained personnel,” stated a senior law enforcement official.
Labor Reaction and Calls for Measures
Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for increased action. A labor leader said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available assistance, tools and robust procedures in place”.
A different association leader urged the rail company and authorities “to act quickly to review security, to support the affected employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
Driver Commended for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t stop the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to access, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” stated a association official.
Additional Details
Police said they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer recounted initially wondering if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from people's expressions that it was real.
Police have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have requested the public to come forward with any additional details.
Rail operations on the affected line are expected to have delays until Monday, with passengers recommended to postpone their travel where feasible.
