Wonder Man Trailer Reveals Marvel's Most Self-Referential Series To Date

Marvel is aware that audiences might be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to include that very concept into their next superhero show.

That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The preview, which debuted on October 10th, also quietly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original end of 2025 window into January 2026.

Why one more superhero movie? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why watch them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a profound level. There is an opportunity to shock viewers. To reimagine the entire category of narrative.

The reporter responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"

The trailer then cuts to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his mobile device, and the preview ends.

Key Details About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series features Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).

The rest of the cast includes actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC agent P. Cleary.

The Studio's Meta-Humor Strategy

We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio plans to poke some fun at itself.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the studio is all in on self-referential comedy. Will that work without the celebrity appeal of its previous leads? Only time will tell.
